The intent of the history curriculum at City Academy is to expose students to core concepts that are important for GCSE but also life after school.

There are 5 major concepts that we aim to develop student’s understanding of:

  • Democracy (How it has developed and changes over time)
  • Monarchy (How it changed over time and the role monarchs have played)
  • Conflict (Causes of significant conflicts, conflict resolution, consequence of major world conflicts)
  • Religion (Religious changes over time, religious conflict and tolerance of religion)
  • Society (Society changes, taxation, classes, average person, women’s history, minority history)

Our schemes of work are designed to motivate, challenge, provoke curiosity and inspire students. The curriculum shares a variety of diverse experiences and are relevant for the community that we serve. This ensures that the students at City academy have an interest and input into the rigorous history curriculum we have put in place. For example, our slavery and American civil rights units ensure that we celebrate the successes of the community that we serve, rather than seeing the black individual as the oppressor, we also celebrate the success that African – American communities have brought to British culture. Throughout KS3 students develop their writing skills from using description and facts, up to explaining points of view and finally analysing arguments and coming to judgements by Year 9, this then allows them to access the GCSE.

The History team are committed and passionate to ensuring that the curriculum is embedded in the acceptable way for our students to maximise their knowledge of the past. We are constantly reflective of the community we serve and continue to develop and guarantee that the students at City academy have the knowledge to access life after the academy.
