Within Modern Foreign Languages at City Academy students articulate their thoughts and respect other cultures and are able to do so through teaching methods supported by a plethora of research, such as Lemov, Rosenshine et al, Tharby and Allison.
By teaching vocabulary explicitly and through themes such as, identity and culture, local, national, international, and global areas of interest, and current and future study and employment, and having a constant focus on knowledge retrieval of this vocabulary through questioning, spelling tests and translations, students are equipped to communicate in each of the required disciplines of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
A consistent focus on grammar underpins all that is taught in Modern Foreign Languages, such as verb conjugation, concept of gender and number, thus improving students’ literacy across the school. Students are educated to be reflective learners, through teaching them rigour and resilience in the form of regular feedback, both verbal and written.
In Modern Foreign Languages, we want our students to leave school with a broad understanding of the world, which they will gain through studying themes in Hispanic/Francophone contexts and a set of strong life-long linguistic skills that are reinforced through grammatical knowledge.
