The mission of the Art Department at City Academy is to provide students with intellectually informed, hands-on instruction in the practice of an array of visual arts media, to successfully integrate a personal, studio-based education from a broad pedagogical framework. We aim to foster an environment where the unique talents and perspectives of our individual students can emerge and flourish.

The Art Department is committed to creating an active learning environment, which fosters rich and meaningful work. The Art Department is a vibrant and energetic place, which develops a creative and disciplined approach to the study of Art through a combination of practical and written activities designed to ensure our students are problem solvers and independent learners, who exhibit resilience, self-control, organisation, presentation skills and collaborative skills at all times. In Art, students will explore all areas of the assessment criteria both visually, practically and through research inside and outside of the classroom. The written component of the curriculum focuses on History and Appreciation of Art. The History element focusing on developing students’ awareness and appreciation of the world around them. We aim to foster an appreciation and understanding of both current affairs and historical knowledge where necessary, while orchestrating each assessment objective in a timeline of developments.

The mission of Art & Design is to inspire, educate, and fully prepare our students to become exceptional artists through a unified curriculum that incorporates a broad spectrum of disciplines. The aim of the Art Department is to develop imagination, creativity, independence and resourcefulness in our students through the teaching and learning of a wide variety of practical and academic skills in the areas of art, craft, design and the history and appreciation of art. Our students have access to a range of Arts and Crafts media and there are unlimited opportunities to discover their potential in this subject. We prepare our students to embark on the multi-faceted career opportunities offered through engagement with Art, Craft and Design studies. We aim to foster a lifelong appreciation of art and visual culture through practical art making and creativity and also through the study of art history. Students are encouraged to visit galleries, museums and to develop an awareness and enjoyment of the visual world around them. Students are openly encouraged to have the creative freedom based on critical insight and formal and technical innovation of the visual art they produce.
